For the first time in more than a decade, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has updated its clinical guidance for managing menopause-related symptoms, reflecting growing evidence and an expanding range of treatment options.
The updated recommendations reinforce the role of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) in managing hot flashes, night sweats, and related sleep disturbances for eligible patients, while recognizing the importance of non-hormonal alternatives.
Key highlights include:
- Hormone therapy: Systemic MHT is recommended for eligible patients experiencing vasomotor symptoms and related sleep disturbances.
- Expanded non-hormonal options: Newer neurokinin receptor antagonists, along with certain established medications, provide alternatives for patients who cannot or prefer not to use hormones.
- Individualized care: Treatment decisions should consider medical history, risk factors, symptoms, and patient preferences.
A Clinical Perspective from Arora Health
"For far too long, women have been told that the physical and emotional challenges of menopause are simply part of aging, something to tolerate rather than treat. ACOG’s updated guidelines reinforce a much-needed shift in how we approach women’s health.
Menopause is not a condition women should have to suffer through in silence. We have effective, evidence-based therapies that can meaningfully improve symptoms and quality of life. As physicians, our responsibility is to move beyond simply managing symptoms and toward proactive, personalized care that empowers women to feel their best at every stage of life.
Women deserve more than reassurance that what they’re experiencing is normal. They deserve to know that treatment options exist, that their concerns are heard, and that their quality of life matters."
- Shannon Arora, Chief Medical Officer at Arora Health
The updated guidance marks an important step toward more personalized menopause care, reinforcing the importance of equipping healthcare providers with the resources and clinical support to better serve women at every stage of life.
